Gleðileg jól

Fjölskyldan á Brúnum óskar öllum þeim sem þessa síðu skoða gleðilegra jóla og farsældar á nýju ári. Megi nýtt ár færi ykkur gleði og hamingju.

We wish you very merry christmas and happy new year.

Skagafjordur

We have used this weekend, as so many others , to bring horses  from one place to another. We took 10 horses home but they should go to training. We went to Skagafjörður with one mare (Sigurrós) in training in Tunguháls. She is very easy and calm and went directly in the trailer when we took her and when we came in Tunguháls she went directly in the stable. We have three ofsprings from Forseti from Vorsabær and all of them are so easy and trust the man. We also went to Hjaltastadir in Skagafjordur but the housewife there made a lot of things from leather and skins. Einar bought cover under the saddle who she made by lambskin and those who have tried it, is very  happy.  Finally we went to Flugumýri to our friends Palli and Anna andi it is always pleasing to come there.

Desember

Now it’s time for some writing. Last weekend the horses were taken and given worm medicine and the foals was micromarking. They appear all to be healthy and next weekend we are going to take the foal mares and having them in a separete compartment in winter. Ivar Örn came from Reykjavik and helped us invaluable. Now we are going to send horses in training and one will go south on the land but it is Bríet, daughter of Dís from Möðrufell andForseti from Vorsabær.  Ævar Örn horsetrainer in Reykjavik is going to be with her. It is also planned to send Sigurrós to Líney in Tunguháls. Mother  of Sigurrós is Lysa from Höfði and her father is Forseti from Vorsabær.Eik is going to be trained in Akureyri with Birgir Árnason but he had it last spring or until she had become ill.

I put here the photos of Sigurrós, Bríet and Eik, two daughters of Forseti and one daughter of Flótti from Borgarhóli.

Kvistur from Skagaströnd

We would like to continue talking about the stallions we used this summer and Kvistur from Skagaströnd is among them. Kvistur was used on three of our mares; Bjork from Ytra-Laugalandi, Venus from Toftir and Thoka from Stafni, all of whom are with a foal. Kvistur is an beatiful horse with a big personality, but we got to know him very well this summer.

Kvistur is a very talented horse and at the age of just 5 he had scored a total of 8.58 in breeding evaluation, 8.26 for conformation and 8.79 for ridden abilities. His equally high scores attract ones attention having recieved 9 for tolt, trot, pace and spirit. Kvistur is son of the great breeding mare Sunna from Akranes and Hrodur from Refstadir. His syblings are very talented; Þota (8,31), Þruma (8,27), Þökk (8,00 and Þjóð (8,34) which are all offspring of Sunna. Kvistur is a gene carrier of „slettu-skjótt“ a form of pinto and many of his offspring are very colorful. We are really looking forward to seeing our foals from him next summer, especially what color they will be.

Now is frost on the ground

Wether has been bad the last few days. In saturday and saturday night was very bad wether and heavy snowfall. We were inside and do handicrafts, Einar drew, the girls decorated, I wrote, and we are pleased with the result.

We go out and walk in the morning, in first time since end of June or since Einar was injured. Wether was beautiful and everything so white, clean and bright.

We give the horses hay where they are in cover. They are healthy and happy and it is especially nice to see offspring of Auður from Lundir. They are very beautiful with high tread. Always something that please the eyes.

Hófur from Varmilækur

Now I continue to discuss the stallions who we used this summer and one of them is Hófur from Varmilækur. We took Hrafntinna from Höfði under him but Hrafntinna is one of ours favorite mare, beautiful with lot of mane. We got Hrafntinna from Sigurður Bergþórsson from Höfði in Borgarfjörður who was a owner of Höfða-Gustur. Hrafntinna is daughter of Stjarni from Vatnsleysa and Árna-Skjóna from Sauðárkrókur but she was daugther of Höfða-Gustur. Hrafntinna is sister of Auðna from Höfði which is mother of Auður from Lundir and other famous stallions.

Hófur has a excellent four-gaits ability, 9.0 for tolt, slow tolt, trot, willingness and impression and last but not least 9.5 for jump. Presence and tread fantastic and his forehand too.

Ölur is son of Hrafntinna and Rökkvi from Hárlaugsstaðir. There is great picture and video of him in the sales page on Holakot.net.

Vilmundur from Fet

We took our first prized mare Birta from Brúnir under Vilmundur from Feti this summer. Vilmundur from Feti was a break-through on LM 2006 in Vindheimamelar, ridden by Þórður Þorgeirsson. This young horse was very vigorous, those who watched were astounded. His four-gaits were fantastic, 9.0 for tolt and trot. Pace and gallop also great; 8.5. Willingness and impression as good as it gets, 9.0 for the general impression and 9.5 for spirit. Total score of 8.95 for ridden abilities.

Vilmundur’s confirmation is good 7,96, although not of the same class as his abilities. He has no weak links in the building. Overall he looks good whereever you look at him. High hopes are set to Vilmundur as a breeading horse and the first offspring is very promising.

We used Vilmundur to Birta as she is a very beutiful mare with even scores for confirmation and ridden abilities and we hope to get there a beautiful talented offspring.

We used this one

We used several stallions this summer and are going to discuss them gradually. Hrímnir from Ósi is one of them but we took Þræta from Syðri-Hofdalir under him. Hrímnir is a four gaited stallion in the top of his class, he received 9.5 for tolt and trot in his breeding evaluation in June 2010 among other things, only 5 years old and newly recovered from the illness we had here last winter. He has a good temperament, great will, form and speed along with smooth and strong gaits. These are all traits that place him among the top four gated stallions in Iceland today.

Gári from Auðsholtshjáleiga

It has been agreed upon that Gári from Auðholtshjáleiga will be with us next summer. The latest calculation of the international BLUP breeding evaluations was published in WorldFengur the other day with Gári at the top of the list. Here is what the Auðholtshjáleiga breeding farm had to say about it:

„The new breeding evaluation is out. Our stallion Gári from Auðsholtshjáleiga reached new hights in that evaluation. He scored an astounding 140 points for conformation and 120 points for rideability, totaling a BLUP score of 129 points. He has 41 assessed offspring, of which 21 have received 1st prize and only one offspring gotten a lower score than 7.70. Gári stands at the top of the list alongside Garri from Reykjavík, but with more assessed offspring than Garri. It is worth mentioning that the stallion with the next highest BLUP evaluation for conformation has 125 points.“

Here comes the list:

Sunday

Most of today was spent bustling around the horses. We took 2 horses to Akureyri og then went and picked up my Birta with her son from Markús, Bjatur, because Einar did not feel like he was thriving well enough. We gave then dewormers and the two of them will be here at home with Stássa and her daughter for the winter.

The „Hryllings“ trip planned to the east of Iceland was cancelled this weekend because of the terrible weather forecast, which then turned out not to come true. But that did not stop them from having fun as they held a large feast here instead. It was a great night with good friends and we enjoyed the weekend in our home town.

I came along a new article on hestafrettir.is today:

Seventy-nine mares born 2009 are over 120 points in BLUP evaluation. Highest is Völva from Hólar with 126 points, she is also the highest individual of all the horses born 2009. Völva is daughter of Vilmundur from Fet and Þrift from Hólar. Three mares have 125 points.

The Blup evaluation is as follows:

  • IS2009258300 Völva frá Hólum 126 Vilmundur frá Feti Þrift frá Hólum
  • IS2009258310 Tíska frá Hólum 125 Kvistur frá Skagaströnd Þokka frá Hólum

  • IS200926658 Hlýja frá Hléskógum 124 Gári frá Auðsholtshjáleigu Þota frá Skagaströnd
  • IS2009287936 Líf frá Votumýri 2 124 Gári frá Auðsholtshjáleigu Önn frá Ketilsstöðum
  • IS2009286913 Hekla frá Feti 124 Vilmundur frá Feti Ösp frá Háholti
  • IS2009286906 Saga frá Feti 124 Orri frá Þúfu Vigdís frá Feti

  • IS2009284066 Ösp frá Efri-Rotum 124 Kvistur frá Skagaströnd Frægð frá Hólum

As you can see Vilmundur and Kvistur are both very prominent but we used both of them this summer, hopefully they will give us something good :-) and Gári will be here next summer !
